Anaphylaxis Caused by Varicella Vaccine

Anaphylaxis is an acute, systemic, and potentially life-threating hypersensitivity reaction with multiple organ systems involvement. The major systems involved include the skin, cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems.

Common symptoms include:

• A generalized itchy skin rash

• Airway swelling and difficulty breathing

• Hypotension

• Nausea and vomiting

To qualify for the presumption of causation under the Injury Table, the first onset of symptoms must have occurred within 4 hours of vaccination.

Disseminated Varicella Vaccine-Strain Viral Disease

Disseminated Varicella Vaccine-Strain Viral Disease occurs when the varicella vaccine you receive causes you to experience the disease (or symptoms of the disease) it was designed to protect you from. Typically, this presents as a varicella rash (like chickenpox) on the skin or infection of another bodily organ.

There are different circumstances under which the Disseminated Varicella Vaccine-Strain Viral Disease can qualify as a “Table Injury”. If the vaccine-strain virus is identified, there is no timeframe by which the first onset of symptoms must occur for the presumption of causation to apply. However, if a strain determination test is not done or if laboratory testing is inconclusive, the first onset of symptoms must occur no earlier than between 7 and 42 days after the vaccine was administered for the presumption to apply.  

Varicella Vaccine-Strain Viral Reactivation

Varicella Vaccine-Strain Viral Reactivation occurs when the virus becomes reactivated after a period of dormancy and causes symptoms such as skin lesions and rashes.

Under these circumstances, there is no timeframe by which the first onset of symptoms must occur for the presumption of causation to apply.

Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA)

SIRVA is an injury caused by the injection of a vaccine into the shoulder joint rather than the deltoid muscle. The needle of the shot (as opposed to the vaccine itself) is what causes the injury. The main symptoms include persistent shoulder pain and a limited range of motion in the injured shoulder.

To qualify for the presumption of causation under the Injury Table, the first onset of symptoms must have occurred no later than 48 hours after the vaccine was administered.

Vasovagal Syncope

Vasovagal Syncope happens when your blood pressure and heart rate drop suddenly, causing you to pass out following a vaccination.

Symptoms include:

• Fainting episodes

• Weakness

• Fatigue

• Confusion

• Lightheadedness

• Headache

• Blurred vision

• Nausea

• Poor concentration

• Confusion.

In order to qualify for the presumption of causation under the Injury Table, the first onset of symptoms must have occurred no later than 1 hour after the vaccine was administered.
